Ibrahim Hajr Ismail Zam Zam

Hejaz is a region in the west of present-day Saudi Arabia. Defined primarily by its western border on the Red Sea, it extends from Haql on the Gulf of Aqaba to the borders of Asir. Its main city is Jeddah, but it is probably better known for the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina. As the site of Islam's holy places, the Hejaz has significance in the Arab and Islamic historical and political landscape. The region is so called as it separates the land of Najd in the east from the land of Tihamah in the west.  [Ref : 02_02_01]
Mecca Makkah, pronounced also transliterated as Makkah, is a city in the Hejaz and the capital of Makkah Province in Saudi Arabia. The city is located 70 km (43 mi) inland from Jeddah in a narrow valley at a height of 277 m (909 ft) above sea level. Its resident population in 2012 was roughly 2 million, although visitors more than triple this number every year during Hajj period held in the twelfth Muslim lunar month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Usually the authors or the scholars who write about Muhammad (saw) they not usually start talking about his birth ,they will go little bit before that few thousand years before that. They talk about his Father Ibrahim (as)   That’s usually they would start talking about Rasulullah(saw) they would talk about his ancestry starting from Ibrahim (as).  The emphasis on the Hajar and Ismail side of the story rather then the Ishaq and Sarah.   Because that is the lineage of Muhammad(saw).  They start talking about Ibrahim(as), hajar and sarah when they travelled to Hejaz.  Ibrahim(as), His wife and his new born son travelled in to Arabia in to the land of Hijaz and Ibrahim took them to current day Mecca, at that time there was nothing there, nobody was living there , no cultivation, it was a dead valley. But the place where the kaaba was build, the place where the house of Allah was build was sacred since the world was created

In fact there is a difference of opinion who was the first one to build Al-Kaba, The majority of the Scholars says it was first build by Ibrahim(as), but there are some Scholars it was Adam(as) was the first one to built it, Regardless whether  its Ibrahim (as) or Adam (as) build it, the place itself whether there was a building on it or not was Holy and Sacred from day one.

Ibrahim(as) , his wife and his son arrived to the valley and in the place where Zam Zam is currently (there was not Zam Zam at that time) , Ibrahim(as) left his wife and son Ismail. He left with them some water and leather bag of Dates and walked away. He just turned away and left.  Hajar (as) knew that Ibrahim(as) going to leave them but she did not expect to be left in such a place, in the middle of a desert , She followed him and she said “Ibrahim are you going to leave us in such a place where there is no cultivation and no one living” Ibrahim (as) did not answer back , She asked him again , no response. She asked him third time , he did not answer back and then Hajar(as) said “Aallahhu amarakabi haaza?” (Did Allah tell you to do so?). Ibrahim (as) said ‘YES’. Then Allah will take care of us.  If this is a command from Allah, then I have trust in Allah that he will take care of us. (Look at the faith of this women, in the middle of nowhere, if this is the command of Allah , I have trust in Allah, Allah will take care of us, Allah will not neglect us.)

Ibrahim reached to the place where they cannot see him anymore. Ibrahim(as) turned around and face the place of Al-Kaba and he made dua to Allah, he said

Surat 'Ibrāhīm (Abrahim) [14:37]

Sahih International Translation
Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.

"O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in an uncultivable valley by Your Sacred House (the Ka'bah at Makkah); in order, O our Lord, that they may perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), so fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and (O Allah) provide them with fruits so that they may give thanks.

The Kaaba  is a cuboid building in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, located inside the Masjid al-Haram.  Muslims are expected to face the Kaaba during prayers, no matter where they are. From any given point in the world, the direction facing the Kaaba is called the Qiblah. Ref : 02_02_02
The Well of Zamzam is a well located within the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, 20 m (66 ft) east of the Kaaba.   it is a miraculously-generated source of water from Allah, which began thousands of years ago when Abraham's (Ibrahim) infant son Ishmael  was thirsty and kept crying for water. ZamZam water level is around 10.6 feet below the surface.  It is the miracle of Allah that when ZamZam was pumped continuously for more than 24 hours with a pumping rate of 8,000 liters per second, water level dropped to almost 44 feet below the surface, BUT WHEN THE PUMPING WAS STOPPED, the level immediately elevated again to 13 feet after 11 minutes. 8,000 liters per second means that 8,000 x 60 = 480,000 liters per minute 480,000 liters per minutes means that 480,000 x 60 = 28.8 Million liters per hour And 28.8 Million liters per hour means that 28,800,000 x 24 = 691.2 Million liters per day So they pumped 690 Millions liters of ZamZam in 24 hours, but it was re-supplied in 11 minutes only.  There are 2 miracles here, the first that ZamZam was re-filled immediately, & the second is that Allah Holds the extra-ordinarily powerful Aquifer for not throwing extra ZamZam out of the well, otherwise the world will SINK. It is the translation of the word ZamZam, which means Stop !!!!!!!!!!!! Stop !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! said by Hajirah Alaih As Salaam [Ref : 02_02_03 ]

 Al-Safa and Al-Marwah (Safa and Marwah) are two small mountains now located in the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia between which Muslims travel back and forth seven times during the ritual pilgrimages of Hajj and Umrah called Sa'i Sa'i is the devotional act of walking seven times back and forth between the two hills of As-Safa and Al-Marwah. This act retraces the footsteps of Hajar (wife of Prophet Ibrahim).

Ibrahim(as) said Oh Allah , I am leaving my offspring in infertile land , the land with no cultivation , next to your Sacred house (the place was known that it was Sacred, even though Kaba was not build) and then Ibrahim(as) made a dua

As we know the Maslows the hierarchy of needs , The pyramid, The foundation of Pyramid , the bottom the first human need that need to be satisfied is Physiological need , this is the most Important need for humans (That’s the base of the pyramid) after that comes Psychological and then the third Social, then Spiritual and then the peak itself Actualisation.  Firstly as human being you need to satisfy the Physiological need which are Food and Shelter After that you want to have friends , a social life , have a belonging , an association, those are the Social needs. And then Spiritual needs  thinking about religion according to Maslows. Finally we have self-Actualization in the top of the Pyramid.

But according to Ibrahim(as) the Pyramid is inverted (As in the mind map below)

the first thing he asked for is not Food and Drink or Shelter the First thing he asked for was “Rabana yuqimusolah”, Even thouh it makes sense if he asked for food, we assume that Ibrahim(as) left them in the valley , where no cultivation so the first thing he will ask to provide his family with Food for their survival , but Ibrahim (as) started his Dua by saying “Rabana yuqimusolah” (Oh Allah they may establish prayer), the first need he asked for was Spiritual Needs (Solah, Iqamatus solath, Estabilishing the prayers)  and then he said “then put their love in hearts of people , make people love them” he is asking Allah(Swt) to draw people to his family and to make them love his family so he is asking for the Social needs. Then finally he said , “Then provide them with fruits”.  Ibrahim (as) starting by asking for Solah (Spritual needs), then Social needs, and then physiological needs . but even when he ask Allah(Swt) to provide them with “Thamarath” (Fruits) he also connected it to Ibadah “Laa’llhum yaskuroon” (so that they may give grateful), even when he ask Allah(swt) to provide worldly things , he is still connecting it to religion. (Give them fruits so that they will be grateful to you) that is the true self-actualization. Allah become everything for you.   When you are eating, When you are drinking, When you are sleeping you are doing everything for Allah.   That is the true tranquillity, that is the self-actualization that neither Maslow   or anybody has achieved except the Anbiya and Awliya of Allah(azzaujal) .

Ibrahim (aS) left , Hajar made use of the small amount of food that he left with them , but obliviously after a short while they ran out of food. Hajr (as) was breastfeeding Ismail and her milk was drying up because she is thirsty and hungry and now Ismail (as) beginning to Cry , he is hungry . Hajar (as) could not afford to see her son agenising in pain, She left him and she started to claiming on a Hill , the Hill which was called later ‘As-Safa’ ,She climb on the top of the Hill to see anybody in the Horizon .

She would look left and right and would see no one. Then she will climb down the Hill , when she reach the valley she will tuck up her cloths to run, then she will climb another Hill which was later called Al-Marwa, she will reach the top and look in the Horizon to see anybody and her son is twisting and turning in pain  .  Hajar (as) running up and down these Hills ,she did this for 7 times , the 7th time when she reached the top of the Hill , she heard the Sound and she was staring around to see from where the sound is coming from and to an amazement she saw that the sound was coming from beneath the feet of Ismail (as) .  Jibreel (as) descended and was digging the well of Zam Zam and water was coming out from beneath his feet.   Hajar(as) was rushing in happiness to the source of the water , because its dry desert it would sock up all of the water , she was making a pool around the water to contain it.  Rasulullah(saw) when he was narrating this story, he said “rahimullah hu Umm Ismail” May Allah have mercy on the mother of Ismail , If she would have left the water alone , it would have been a flowing river , but because of her interferences it was well.  She was trying to contained the water and she did not allow it to flow , if she would have left the miracle as it was flowing without interfering, it would have been a flowing stream.  So Rasulullah(saw) smiled and said ‘May Allah have mercy on her”

 Jibreel  is the angel of revelation (also known as Gabriel) who recited the Quran to the prophet Muhammad(saw).

Hajar (as) Let’s reflect upon this moment. What must have been the feelings of Hajar while she was running up and down these hills. Her heart must have been broken; she must have been crying because of the pain and suffering of seeing her son dying in front of her eyes. She was a believing woman, a righteous woman and Allah (SWT) was testing her; He was hiding from her something of the future, that she did not know .so at that time naturally as a mother she must have been in extreme pain , seeing her son Crying and she is in the middle of nowhere and running up and down to these mountains  .  Imagine Hajar is resurrected and at the time of Hajj and  had a chance to see what Muslims from all over the world are doing today at the time of Hajj.

Rasoolullah (SAW), while he was mentioning the story of Hajar going up and down as-Safa and al-Marwa, said “and that is why we go between Safa and Marwa”. So we are following the footsteps of our mother Hajar. If Hajar knew that a time will come when people would come from all corners of the world to follow her footsteps in millions to do what she did, she would have gone though this, between Safa and Marwa, with a big smile of her face.

This is a lesson to us, Muslims, too. As a believer, when we go through some trials and tribulations, we might have a certain mind set , we might have a certain feelings but you don’t know what’s waiting for you on the other side , you don’t know what Allah is hiding for you in future This is a gift from Allah (SWT) for Hajar in duniya.  Just think about what Allah(Swt) will give in Akirah.

when we go through some trials and tribulations lets always remember this  let’s remember Hajar went through the same and Allah provided her with something better; something Allah (SWT) was hiding from her. So let’s have patience and be successful in such trials and tribulations.

Moosa (as), when he was with his family, got lost in her desert on the way to Egypt. It was a cold windy night and they did not know which direction to go. He saw a fire in the distance and told his wife “I will go to that fire and bring you light and guidance”. He wants to bring light because it was a dark night and he wanted to have some warmth in the cold weather and he wanted guidance, he expected since fire in the desert that must be some people there, its a bond fire there must be people around it, so I will go and ask them for directions that’s all Moosa wanted . He wanted light on that dark night and he wanted guidance to Egypt. But Allah(Swt) was hiding something better for him , Allah tells us the story in Qur’an.

When Moosa (as) went near the fire, he met Allah(swt) and spoke to Him.  Rather than Moosa (A) going back with light for the dark night and guidance to Egypt, he returned with light for humanity and guidance not just for Egypt but to Jannah. He went there and that was the announcement of his Prophet hood. It was done right then and there. Moosa(as) lost in the desert went to the fire Allah(swt) told him

Surat Ţāhā [20:14]

Indeed, I am Allah . There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
Muhsin Khan Translation
"Verily! I am Allah! La ilaha illa Ana (none has the right to be worshipped but I), so worship Me, and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) for My Remembrance.

Moosa (as) wanted something, but he got something better. The Sahabah (ra) went through lot of difficulties, however Allah (SWT) reserve them the top levels of Jannah. So let think about this we ourselves go thru the moments of difficulties.


In the desert, whenever there is a source of water, it would immediately track forms of life. So now birds were beginning to hover the Zam Zam well. Nothing was living there because it was a dead valley

The tribe called Jurhum, who were nomads, were in that particular area during that time. Jurhum was a tribe that moved out of Yemen.

Yemen is the birth place of the Arab people and the Arabic language. That’s where Arabs tribes immigrated from. There were many mass or waves of immigration that happened from Yemen in different times. One of the waves was when the dam of Yemen was destroyed.

There is a chapter called Saba in Holy Qur’an, which is the name of that kingdom. Allah tells us the story that these were people who built the first dam in the world, because of that dam they had year around source of Water  Even though, there wasn’t much rain in Arabia and precipitation level is low, they had year round of source of water.

They had this massive network of irrigation that went for hundreds of miles. There was a huge population living in this semi arid are because of the existence of water. Stories goes, which may be exaggerated, that a woman would go out for a walk with a basket on her head and would come back with the basket of full of fruits, the fruits are just dropping from the trees.

It does say in the Qur’an that because of their wealth and cultivation that they had, they didn’t feel any pain and suffering of travelling like the rest of the world because it was a continuous series of colonies. Wherever they would go, there would be villages and towns and there was so much wealth they did not see the suffering and difficulties of travelling like the rest of world. These people, because of their arrogance and disbelieve in Allah, they said, “we want to feel the pain of travelling like everyone else” and they asked Allah to make it difficult for them. Allah granted their wish by destroying the dam and flooding the area. All the agriculture collapsed.

There was a huge wave of immigration which spread the Arab people out of Yemen into Najd, Hijaz, Madina (Al Aus and Al Khajraj settled in madina), Iraq, Syria, Oman and Sham. This is how the Arabs spread from the small locality of Yemen, This back ground of Arabs is given here because Jurhum was one of these tribes

 
Jurhum was one of the tribe that immigrated to before or after the collapse of the dam. They went into Hijaz and are familiar with the area of Mecca. They knew there was no water in that area. So when they saw the hovering birds in the area, they wondered what was going on in the particular area and they sent One or two people went to investigate the matter and returned to report that there is a well in that area.

Jurhum went to the place where Zam Zam is located and asked Hajar a strange question and they get a stranger reply. They asked Hajar, “Can we settle in this place?” The reason why this Question is strange, This is the tribe of Warriors and here they are getting the permission from a lonely women with her child, on the day one they could have just pushed her away, but they were very kind to ask her permission to stay there, even though it was empty place there was no body living there and her answer was amazing she started to bargain and negotiating with them  She said “Well I have a condition. The water belongs to us”. You can stay here but water is mine. The well belongs to me , they agreed.

Here you have a woman who is alone with no power and no strength, no weapons and no army, to help; and she is bargaining and negotiating with Jurhum. Rasoolullah(saw) says, “Deep in her heart, she wanted them to stay right from the beginning.” Because she wanted to have some company, but she was negotiating with them to get better deal and she got it , they ended up in settling in that area which later become known as Mecca.




Qusai ibn Kilab ibn Murrah (Qusayy or Kusayy) ca. 400 – 480) was the great-grandfather of Shaiba ibn Hashim (Abdul-Mutallib), thus the great-great-great-grandfather of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. [REF  Ibn Hisham. The Life of the Prophet Muhammad 1. p. 181.]

Hashim ibn 'Abd Manaf (ca. 464 – 497) was the great-grandfather of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the progenitor of the Banu Hashim clan of the distinguished Quraish tribe in Mecca.His name was 'Amr al-Ul'a but he was given the nickname Hashim which translates as pulverizer in Arabic - because he initiated the practice of providing crumbled bread in broth for the pilgrims to the Ka'aba in Mecca

Ismail (as) grew up with them and adopted their language which was Arabic (language of Ibrahim was Aramaic from Iraq). Ismail (as) brought up by this Arab tribe and he adopted this language

He married a woman from among them. This is beginning of lineage of Rasulullah(saw) through Ismail (A) in Mecca.

Durhum had the political leader ship in Mecca Later on his father Ibrahim (as) came and they built Al-Kaba.

Present Day Kaaba

The religious leadership in Mecca was with Ismail and continued down along the line of his decedents, Durhum never had the religions authority over Al-Kaba , it was always on the hands of the decedents of Ismail (as)  but the political leader ship was with Durhum.

Durhum stayed in Mecca for a long time, around 2000 years, and became corrupt and tyrannical. So Allah(swt)  sent on them Khuzza who is another tribe from Yemen settled in Hijaz. They went and invaded Mecca and they kicked Durhum and before they left they did two things. One is that they dumped the well of Zam Zam. They filled it up and erased all of its trace. Second is that they stole the treasures which were inside Kaaba.

Khuzza now became the new leaders of Mecca. The descendants of Ismail (A) have already increased in number and branched out spreading all over Arabia. There was one tribe that remained in Mecca and that was Quraish.

Quraish is one of many who decendent from Ismail (as) they were called the descendants of Adnan. Qurish was still living in Mecca, but now Mecca is now ruled by Khuzza

The leader of Khuzza, who controlled politics in Mecca, was Amir bin luhi al Khuzzai (We will talk about his story when we come to the religious background of Arabia, as of now we will continue to talk about the lineage of Rasulullah (saw)  and the leader of Quraish, who controlled religious activities in Mecca, was Qusayy bin Kilab. Qusayy was able to unify Quraish and led a revolt against Khuzza. He was able to drive Khuzza completely from Mecca.

Qusayy , a descendent of Ismail now combined the political and religious aspects of Mecca. He consolidated all the authority of different aspect of power in his hands.

He controlled the guardianship of Kaaba (Al-hijaba) which was a noble thing. He also controlled the provisioning of water and food to the pilgrims (Siqaya and Rifada) . This may not be a big deal for us, but for them it was considered to be a great honour; that they were providing for the guest of Allah, they use to fight on this.  All of the Arabs will come for pilgrimage and will be hosted by the people of the Qurish, They will provide them with food through out their stay in the season of Hajj, Qusayy bin kilab also was responsible for that  . also they had the control of An-nadwa , Nadwa is assembly of Qurish , its like their parliament. He held control over that. He also held control of Al- Liwa , it is the banner of WAR. In other words he was the one who has the power to declare war. These were the authorities that Qussay-bin-kilab has. Basically he had every authority that existed in Mecca. He was the absolute ruler of Mecca.

Qusayy, when he died, split these authorities among his children – some with Abd-al-Manaf and others with his brothers.

The grandson of Qusayy, His name is Amr, ended up inheriting from his father the authority to provision Al-hujaaj (the pilgrims of Mecca during Haj) providing them with food and drink. Amr did something innovative in feeding of Hujaaj; rather than providing with soup of meat cooked in big containers and they will feed the people with soup, this way we can feed larger number. What Amr did is? , he started crushing bread into the soup , he will mix bread with soup ,which was an upgrade to the meals for the pilgrims, rather than having only soup now they will have soup with bread. The process of crushing the bread in Arabic is called “Hashim” in Arabic and Amr was nicknamed Hashim. Amr alias Hashim was the great grandfather of Rasulullah (saw). He was named Hashim because of crushing bread in to the soup.

Hashim got married from Madina. He went to Palestine to do business and he passed away in Ghaza (He died and buried in Ghaza). His wife who was pregnant during that time gave birth to a child called “Sheiba” – meaning old man. Why did they name a baby like that? The baby had some grey hair at birth they named him Sheiba.

Because, his father passed away, his mother stayed away with her parents in Madina and he was brought up by her family in Madina.

One day a man comes to Madina. His name is Muthalib and is the brother of Hashim. He came to Madina to claim his nephew [Hashim’s son Sheiba was living in Madina, His uncle Muttalib came to claim her) , Sheiba who is now around eight years old. Muthalib said, “We want to take him back to his land in Mecca”.

The mother’s side of the family refused to give him up, but then al-Muthalib was able to convinced them by saying that he belongs to the most noblest family of Quraish, he needs to go back to his heritage and learn about his family, and start assuming responsibilities in Mecca. Eventually the mother’s family agreed and allowed Sheiba to go with his uncle. Al-Mutalib took with him this child in to Mecca, Nobody in Mecca ever seen this child before , In those days slavery was quiet rampant in Arabia. You could go out in the market, buy a slave and walk back home. Usually they are purchased young so that they can be trained well.

Since, Sheiba is a new comer in Mecca, the people of Mecca assumed that he was the slave of Muthalib and they called him Abdul Muthalib – meaning slave of Muthalib. Abdul Muthalib is the grand father of Rasulullah (saw). His real name was Shaiba but he was nick named Abdul Mutalib they thought that he is a slave of his uncle. Usually the practice is to buy the slave at young age; they raised them up and trained them to what to want them to do so, so they usually purchase them when they are young.

The Khuza'a or Banu Khuza'a form a branch of the South Arabian (Yemenite) tribe of Azd. Most traditionalists trace the origins of the tribe to Amr ibn Lahi al-Khuza'i, and agree that with the other branches of the Azd they at some point left the Yemen and moved north. 'Amr ibn Luhay and his clan settled themselves around Mecca

So far we discussed the lineage of Rasulullah (saw) from Ibrahim (A) to Ismail (A) to Qusayy to Hashim to Abdul Muthalib.

We will spend some time in talking about Abdul Mutalib, because few important events happen to him, actually two. we will talk about two important events that accord with Abdul Muttalib.

Two important events happened in the life of Abdul Muthalib

  1. Recovering Zam Zam and
  2. Sacrificing his son, Abdullah.

Remember the well of Zam Zam was now unknown ,when Durhum erased all of its marks, they filled it up and erased all of its marks before they left Mecca? It was unkown was 300 plus years, because Kuzza ruled over Mecca for 300 years. Then add to that the time of Qussay-ibn-Kilab all the way to Abdul Muttalib, so its 300 years plus.  The well of Zam Zam is lost for over 300 years.

Abdul Muthalib sees a dream in which someone comes to him and tells him (ukfur taiba), Dig Taiba, Taiba means Pure “Dig Pure”. “What is Pure?” responds Abdul Muthalib in the dream. He doesn’t hear anything back and that was the end of the dream.

The following night, the same voice come to him and tells him, [Ukfur barrah] “Dig the Precious”. “What is the Precious?” responds Abdul Muthalib in the dream. Again, he doesn’t hear anything back and that was the end of the dream.

The third night the voice come back to him and says, “Dig Zam Zam”. “What is Zam Zam?” responds Abdul Muthalib in the dream. The voice replies, “It will never fail or dry up. It will water the grand pilgrim. It lies between the dung and the blood near the nest of the crow with the white leg and the ant’s nest.

Zam Zam is defined and the symbols are given to Abdul Muthalib to find it

  • Zam Zam , it never runs out of water.
  • It will provide to the grand pilgrim, meaning Hajj every year and it will be sufficient to provide water for them
  • It lies between the dung and the blood
  • The Crow with white leg  and
  • Nest of ants ,

All of these are obscure things to Abdul Mutalib

Abdul Muthalib next day starts going around Kaaba and see some dung and blood; a camel was slaughtered in that place and the slaughterers left its insides in the open. He then saw a crow with a white leg in the same area along with a colony of ants. Abdul Muthalib realized that this is the where the well of his grandfather is.

He called his son, al-Harith, and started digging. For those who have been to Mecca can understand that Zam Zam is not very far away from Al Kaaba. Here you have Abdul Mutlib and his son digging right next to Al-Kaba Obviously this angered the people of Quraish. Abdul Mutalib continue on working , they kept on protecting but he was digging with him son Al-Harith. Here you have two men digging around one of the most visited place in Arabia and they want to stop it. They started questioning Abdul Muthalib, “What are you doing? You are digging next to al-Kaaba”.

Abdul Muthalib kept on working with his son and the people of Quraish kept of protesting. At that time, Abdul Muthalib had only one son.  They kept on digging and digging; and the people of Quraish kept on wondering what’s going on? What is this man digging for? What is he looking for? So they left him alone.

Suddenly they heard Abdul Muthalib shouting praising Allah (swt). People came rushing and to their amazement found Abdul Muthalib uncover the rim of the well of Zam Zam.

Now all of the leaders of Quraish gathered and said, “Yeah, this is the well of our grandfather Ismail. This belongs to all of us. Let’s share.”

“Wait a minute. I was the one who saw the dream, I was the one who uncovered it, it belongs to me and me alone”, replied Abdul Muthalib.

They said, “No way. We are all descendants of Ismail. So it belong to all of us”

Abdul Muthalib refused to give up and they kept on insisting. When they were unable to solve the dispute and about to go on war on it, someone suggested to them, “Let’s solve the dispute by going to the witch of Bani Saath”. The witch claims to have connections with the spirits, so lets go to her and seek her consultation.

So Abdul Muthalib and the leaders of Quraish travelled to the place of the witch to find out that she relocated to Syria.  They said, “We will follow her wherever she is” and they started journey towards Sham. Along the way they ran out of water. They were in the middle of the desert with no water and Abdul Muthalib said, “If we are gonna die here, let’s at least dig our graves and whenever one of us dies, the rest could put him in the grave and cover him. So at least, in the end there will be only one uncovered, rather that everyone exposed. At least let’s honor our dead”. Then thus have one without burial.

They all dug their graves and they all laying inside their grave waiting for death to arrive. After waiting for some time, Abdul Muthalib said, “This is not right for men like us to sit here waiting for death. Let’s do something. Let’s go look for water.”

They agreed and went in different direction looking for water. After a short while, Abdul Muthalib finds water. So they said, “If Allah saved you in the middle of this desert and provided you with water, and if Allah have shown you a dream to uncover the well of Zam Zam, then this surely indicates that it’s a blessing for you and it belongs to you. We give up our claim. It’s all yours. Let’s go back.” So they gave it up and agreed to submit to Abdul Mutalib and it was his.  This is one important event that happen to Abdul Mutalib . 

When the whole incident of uncovering Zam Zam happened, Abdul Muthalib felt the pressure of Quraish. He felt he was weak as he had only one son to defend him. In the tribal societies, your strength is based on how many men are on your side and you can only count on your relatives - sons, uncles, brothers, etc.  Your strength is based on how many sons, how many men you have

Abdullah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib (545–570) was the father of the Rasulullah(saw). He was the son of Shaybah ibn H?shim ('Abd al-Mu??alib), and was married to Aminah bint Wahb.

So Abdul Muthalib felt weak he had only one Son on his side Al-Harith and prayed, “Oh Allah, if you bestow me with ten sons, I will sacrifice one of them for your sake. And Allah (swt) did bless him with ten sons. He had ten sons and six daughters. When he had the tenth son (Abdullah) it’s time to fulfil his promise of sacrifice to Allah.

In Mecca, during that time, they had some arrows next to a large idol called Hubel. The arrows were considered divine. The people of Mecca would cast lots with these arrows and leave their choices to this random way.

Abdul Muthalib had the name of all of his sons, including Abdullah, on these arrows and casted lot. The lot came on Abdullah. He tried it again, it came on Abdullah again. He tried the third time and the lot picked Abdullah.

So Abdul Muthalib took his son Abdullah next to Kaaba and was ready with a knife to slaughter him when Abu Talib, one of Abdul Muthalib’s elder sons said, went to his father and said “We cannot allow you to kill your son”. The maternal relatives of Abdullah joined Abu Talib and said, “We are not going to kill our son”.

People around started telling Abdul Muthalib, “If you do it, then it will become sunnah (tradition) for the Arabs after you”. Because Abdul Muthalib was one of the leaders of Quraish, if he did something, it would be a trend after that to sacrifice a son for every ten sons they had. They were already killing their daughters and now they will start killing their sons. They insisted on Abdul Mutalib not to do it.

Abdul Muthalib replied to everyone around him, “This is a pledge I did to Allah. I cannot give it up and I cannot break my promise.”They told him NO you have to stop it and  It became a dispute and they want to solve the dispute by going to the Witch again and finally resorted to the same witch that they sought to resolve the issue on Zam Zam, “Let’s go to the witch”.

The witch told them, “Go and come back tomorrow so that I can consult my spirits this evening. Tonight I will speak to the Jinn”. They returned the next day to her and she asked them, “What is the retribution that you pay to a person that was killed, the diya (blood money)?”

“Ten camels”, they replied.

She said, “Put ten camels on one side and put Abdullah on the other. Cast a lot. If it points towards the camel, then slaughter the camel otherwise if it points to Abdullah then add ten more camels”

They agreed and returned. Abdul Muthalib with all the people of Quraish came together and put Abdullah on side and ten camels on the other.  They threw an arrow and it pointed to Abdullah. They added 10 more camels and threw arrow again. The second arrow pointed again to Abdullah. They added 10 more camels and continued throwing arrows until the number of camels became hundred – 20, 30, 40, 50… 100. The ninth arrow pointed to the 100 camels.

The people of Quraish said, “Now we can release your son”. Abdullah was not convinced, “Not yet, we will have to do it again”. Cast lot first time, cast lot second time and third time it was consistently pointing towards the camels.

So he slaughtered the hundred camels and he had to pay for them all. Abdul Muthalib was a generous man and refused to take any of that meat. He gave it out. There was so much of meat that it was enough to serve people, birds and beast. Later on, Abdul Muthalib was known among the Arabs as the one who fed humans, animals and birds in the sky. The people of Quraish were right, if you killed you Son Abdullah , it will become a tradition among the Arabs after you

Abdullah and Amina were the parents of Rasulllah (saw)

Abdullah married Amina, daughter of Wahab. They are the parents of Rasulullah (saw). Later on Rasulullah was told that he was the son of two sacrificed ones (Ismail (A) and Abdullah).

Hubal  was an Idol worshipped in pre-Islamic Arabia, , This Idol was worshipped at the Kaaba. According to Karen Armstrong, the sanctuary was dedicated to Hubal, who was worshipped as the greatest of the 360 idols the Kaaba contained, which probably represented the days of the year.
