Armah (reigned 614–631), known in Muslim sources as Al-Najashi (Arabic: النجاشي‎), was a king of the Kingdom of Aksum. He is primarily known through the coins that were minted during his reign.[1] However, it has been suggested as long ago as 1895 that he was identical to Ashama ibn-Abjar or Sahama, who gave shelter to the Muslim emigrants around 615–6 at Axum.










































Sayyid Qutb: October 9, 1906[1] – August 29, 1966) was an Egyptian author, educator, Islamist theorist, poet, and the leading member of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood in the 1950s and '60s. Author of 24 books, including novels, literary arts’ critique, works on education, he is best known in the Muslim world for his work on what he believed to be the social and political role of Islam, particularly in his books Social Justice and Ma'alim fi-l-Tariq (Milestones). His magnum opus, Fi Zilal al-Qur'an (In the shade of the Qur'an), is a 30-volume commentary on the Qur'an. While imprisoned in Yemen, Anwar al-Awlaki became influenced by the works of Qutb. He would read 150–200 pages a day of Qutb's works, describing himself during the course of his reading as "so immersed with the author I would feel Sayyid was with me in my cell speaking to me directly
 


 

An Najashi the Nagas refused to hand over the Muslims to the delegation of Qurish , as soon as the both the Muslims and the delegation of the qurish left , Amr bin Al-‘As threaten that I am going to come back and I am going to bring an end to the Muslims. Abdullah bin Abi Rabi‘a said to Amr Bin Al-As that ‘now don’t do that they are still our relatives’ means you don’t need to go that far, Its fine if He (najashi) refused to hand them over then leave it lets go back to Makah. Amr Bin-Al’As said no, tomorrow I am going to come back and I am going to tell the king that they say that “Jesus is a Slave

Amr’Bin Al’As went to the King next day and said some bad things about the Jesus that Muslims claims (ie) Jesus is a slave and he is not son of god. Amr’Bin al’As do not believe in all this but he want to cause fitna. AnNajashi was quiet concern because he is a religious person. An’Najashi recalled Muslims again. Umm Salama (rah) said that nothing worried us more then that event. It caused us great concern. Mean while we decided that to speak the truth, we are going to say what our prophet (saw) as though us, we are going to say the truth no matter what happens.

An-Najashi gathered them to the court and asked Muslims what do you say about ESA (Jesus). Ja‘far bin Abi Talib(ra) stood up and addressed “He is messenger of Allah” , “He is a servant of Allah”, “He is the word of Allah”, “casted on Maryam, The Mary the chaste and virgin”. Negus said that there is no difference between what you say about him and what I say about him, Immediately the priest and bishops started to get angry to hear this response from Najashi., how can you approve such a thing. Even though its all the same with the exception of Servant of Allah.

The Christians of Abyssinia would have been orthodox Christians, who believe the divinity of Jesus, An-najashi stood and said say whatever you want to say , this people are going to be free in my land , in spite of the decision was made these people are going to get my protection. And umm-Salama says that Amr-bin-al-As and his partner left us with disgrace and Najashi drive them back even gave them back their gifts. Because in the first visit of Amr-bin-al-As the first thing that An-Najashi asked was ‘What did you bring me from your land’ Amr-bin-al-As said that “I have brought you some leather products” and That’s the best thing that An-Najashi likes “Leather Products” , so he had this friendship relationship between him and Amr-bin-al-As but when it comes to principles An-Najashi stood with the truth and he refused to hand over Sahaba (Ra), So that’s the story of Al-Hijra to Abasinia .

Lets get on to some lessons,

1) What was the reason of this Hijra: how come Muslims fled their land and went to Abyssinia, how come they could leave the best place on the face of the earth ‘Makkah’ and go somewhere else .

a.   First reason was to flee persecution: they were been tortured in Makkah , so Rasulullah(saw) allow them to leave to flee from this persecution. So they would free themselves from this physical pain Ibn-hazam he says , when the number of Muslims increased so the persecution increased so Allah (Swt) allowed them to migrate.

b.   To save guard their faith: Not everyone will able to handle the torturing , some people will give up their Emaan. Not everyone has the strength of Bilal(ra). Not everyone can risit what Khabab-ibn-Al-Arath(ra) went thru. So the person when fear the safety of his religion they should go somewhere else. And Rasulullah(Saw) says “The believer should not humiliate themself by facing the harm which he is not able to handle” so if it too much for the person to handle then they should not put them self in that difficult situation . to give an example what this concept means there was once a man who came to Rasulullah(Saw) with size of an egg pure gold , he gave it to Rasulullah(saw) and said this is Sadaqqah and it all what i have , Rasululah(saw) was upset and said one of you would come and give up all of their wealth and after that they will come and ask me for assistance. So Rasulullah(Saw) did not want this person to give up all of his money and then ask for help , keep your money give what you are able to give but and keep some for yourself , why do you come and say this is what i have but then we know that Abu-bkr (ra) at one point of time has given all of his wealth to Rasulullah(saw) and Rasululah(Saw) praised that how come the response of the Messenger of Allah(saw) was different , Rasullalh(saW) knew the situation of Abu-Bkr(ra) that he can handle the situation he can give up all of his wealth and he will not get down to the level of begging , he will be able to take care of himself, however not everyone is like Abu-bkr(ra) so for other people they should not put themselves in that difficult situation that they would not able to handle, give everything in that moment of high emotion but after that when things comm. Down you start rethinking about what you have done?,. I have given up all of my money what can i do now? . So not everybody would able to handle what happening in Makkah that’s why Rasululah (Saw) told them to leave to safe guard your religion.

c.   We have a Quote by Sayyid-Qutb: They have gone to Abyssinia for the personal safety alone. They included noblest , well powerful and wealthiest of the prophet(saw) followers and of his fellow tribes men. The majority of them are from the tribe of Qurish including ‘Jafar ibn abitalib (ra)’. And number of young men who are customs to providing protection to the Prophet (saw) like Zubai-ibn-Awaam , Abdur-rahaman ibn auf, Abdul salama mahazumi, Utmaan-ibn-afaan, There were women belonging to most prominent family of Qurish such as umm habiba (daughter of abu-sufiyaan, the qurish’s unrival non-muslim leader.), who have never been persecuted in Mecca., umm habiba would never had been persecuted in Mecca , no one would be able to touch her she is a daughter of Abu-Sufiyan. The leader of Qurish, There where no doubt other reason for the Muslims immigration to Abyssinia, there ws the need to shake the religious and social foundation of Qurish’s most noble and power families, there could be no greater insult or threat to the qurish dynasties that fleeing proudest and most Nobel sons and daughters running away for consciences and religious reasons. Leaving the cultural heritage and tribal homeland behind, So the one who made Hijra belonging to the wealthiest front families of Qurish . According to Sayyid-Qutb This moment is to cause the embracement and to shake the structure of Qurish. Qurish’s position in Arabia was not because of the strength of its Army , Qurish was small in number nevertheless no one dare to attach them and they use to be held in very high esteem they had the deep respect in the hearts of everyone around them , that was because of the value that they have , it was also because of the location next to the house of Allah and the fact was they were the guardians of Al-Kaba . so for the people to see that the noblest among their men and women had to leave Mecca to flee for the safety of their religion was such an embracement for the people of Qurish and to shake their foundation in Arabia according to Another Author his view is that Rasululah (saw) wanted to have a secondary basis, outside of Mecca so if something happen in Mecca at least the religion can survive in somewhere else. Now since the number increased the Muslims could spare dividing in to two groups. One group stay in Mecca and one group would leave and stay in Abyssinia. What was strength this view is the fact that the Muslims in Abyssinia never went back to meet Rasulullah(saw) when he was in Medina until the seventh year of Hijra. They waiting seven years until Rasulullah(saw) made hijra to travel back to Madina. They were not enjoying their stay then wanted to closer to Rasululah(saw) but they stayed there until they got the permission from Rasulullah(saw) to come.

Rasulullah(saw) gave this permission when it was safe for them to comeback , now Islam is firmly established because of the first few years in Madina , Madina was under constant threat Muslims never had a real safety , just because they had the state does not mean that they are secure ,they were always under threat from the attach from one direction or another, but after seven years Islam has now had its root deep , it was firmly established , it was strong , that’s when the sahabas came back from Abyssinia.



Brothers and Sisters :I am spending more time as usual on this story of Al-Hijra, usually in the books of seerah they will glance over for few pages and that’s it. But we are spending lot of time on this (on early session and this session) because of the importance of Al-Hijra to Al-Habasha in our situation. This was a Muslim minority among the non-muslim majority it was a predominantly a Christian country. So there some resemblances there but when it comes to An-Najashi we don’t have any personality similar to him in the West a deeply religious leader with Justice, we have’nt had any thing like that.  May be at one moment of time Laws and Constitution of the West were some what close to the personality of an-Najashi but pretty much changed now.  But i still think that this is an important subject we need to talk about it , now unfortunately there is not lot of narrations that survived dealing with Al-habasah in particular and dealing with Mecca in general. If you open an book of Seerah you will find that , for ex: the book in front of me, this book is around 700 pages and the Mecca Era is 150 pages. So 150 pages dealing with 13 years of Rasulullah(saw) and everything before that. Then you have almost 600 pages dealing with last 10 yrs of Life of Rasulullah(saw) . so you can see the disproportion here. There are few reasons for that

1              The documentation of Hadith was not allowed untill there were Muslims in Madina: In Mecca Rasulullah(saw) did not allowed them(sahabas) to write them the Hadith because he did not want to mix with Qur’an that cause confessions  Lets first concentrate on Quran and then after that you can document the Hadith .

2              Out if early scholars were less interested . in Mecca compare to  their interest in Medina. Why? Because all of the laws and issues related to Islamic state were learned in medina. Mecca did not really relate much to our early scholars because they were living under Chilafah and they were concern about Islamic Laws, the Islamic state, The institution of the Muslim society and all of that to be learn from the 10 years of Medina not Mecca. So that’s why you will find that the writing about Medina are  detail and elaborate but not much written about Mecca.

Now I think we need to give more focus to 13 years Rasulullah(saw) spent in Mecca because there is a significant      percentage of Muslims around the world living as minorities , 100 million plus Muslims as minority in India , 60 million Muslims minority in China,  Millions of Muslims living in Russia, Million of Muslims living in Western Europe, in Northern America , in South America ,  there is lot of Fiqs that is needed for these Muslims minority and that is to be learnt from the years  form Mecca.

So we need more study to be done on the narration that survey from Mecca.  How come Rasulullah(saw) choose Abyssinia start with why not Syria, Why not Iraq, Why not Egypt , how come Abyssinia.  Why not the Persian Empire , The Roman Empire, The Byzantine Empire, there could had been many other choices.  How come Rasulullah(saw) choose Al-Habasah.

1    The number one reason which is stated in the Hadith is the saying of Rasulullah(saw) “Go to Abyssinia because there in is a King who does not oppress any One. Justice was the Primary reason for Muslims going to Al-Habasha, they were in search of Justice because they are fleeing persecution, so they would need to go to the place where they will get Justice and that was Abyssinia.

2    Second reason Which is the secondary reason, is the fact that Arabs were familiar with Al-habasah.

a.    Qurish use to have business with Abyssinia, that is one of the area they would do business during Winter , People of Qurish have two journeys one in summer and one in winter.  In winter one branch use to go to Al-habasha , so they already had the established commercial  relationship.

b.    Rasulullah(saw) very early on exposed to Abyssinian culture.  His (saw) nurse was from Al-Habasha ‘umm ayman’ who took care of Rasulullah(saw) and breast feed him.  She was from al-Habasha .  According to Sahih  Muslim she was from Abyssinia. Umm Ayman was not just Abyssinian her culture and language was Abyssinian.  In one narration she state that she presented Rasulullah(saw) with the soodh (food dish) , So Rasulullah(saw) said what is this, This is the disk we make in Abyisinia  and I wanted you to try it. She was even cooking some Abysinian dishes in Arabia. Her accent, she could not get rid of her Abyssinian accent. For example according to Ibn-ishaq

When she say salamulaahee alaykum (Peace of Allah upon you) she will say “Salamillah alaykum” (which means no peace on you) Rasulullah(saw) will tell her that just say Salam don’t go beyond that .  In the battle of Hunain She was making Dua for the  Muslims , she wanted to say “Thabatallau akdamakum (May Allah make your feet firm ” she said “Sabatallahu akdamakum” .  Rather then saying “Feet” she was saying “Saturday” Sabth means Saturday , the whole sentences does not mean anything Rasulullah(saw) told her  “uskutifaa innaka afralisaan” stay quite because you have a difficult tongue, so she wat not able to get rid of her action and this was the person very close to Rasulullah(saw) and Rasululah(saw) remain closer to her all of his life. He married her to his Adobted Son ‘Zaid bin al-Harith (ra)’, so that was the familiarity of Rasulullah(saw) with Al-Habasha ,which started very early on.

3    Because Abyssinian were Christians  and the muslims use to see the Christians closes to them when compare them to the Idols Worshippers Quraish or Al-Majusias in Persia.

Now what was the language of Communication between Jaffer (ra) and An-Najashi the Negus, probably it was Arabic. There are some narrations state that the Negus lives for few years in Hijaz and that he spoke Arabic and even if he did ‘nt live in Arabia because of the Established Commercial line between Arabs and Abyssinians it is possible that the Abyssinians spoke Arabic or Knew Arabic and this would make more sense because we would find it difficult for example to understand how Negus would weep when he heard the Quran if it was translated thru an interpreter.

When Negus cried we would suspect that he was understanding the meanings of the ayat in the original language for it to have that effect on him. 

Did the Negus become Muslim, he definitely did , even though according to Ibn-Taymia (rah) he was not capable of Appling any of the laws of Islam . Ibn-Taymia says for the fact that An-Najashi did not ruled according to Quran Ibn-Taymia says that the authentic opinion is that he did not even Pray. He did not make Hijra which is mandatory at that time , So he did not practice Islam but he believed in the oneness of Allah and he did what  was possible for him to do for somebody in his position. And Ibn-Taymia also brought the story of Yousuf(as) he said Yousuf (as) even though he was Nabi of Allah but he was not able to apply all of the Laws of Allah(swt) on the non-Muslim population .

Actually Ibn-Taymia has an very interesting essay on this , I did not have time to translate it its quite fascinating one , on his view regarding this issue of a Muslim ruling over a non-muslim or somebody is in situation of An-Najashi , what are the excuses for not applying the Laws of Sharia , we are not going to get in to that but definitely he did become the Muslim and he was though Islam by Jaffer  bin Abi-Talib (ra) and he might had some secret sessions with Jaffer ibn abi talib (ra) to study Islam  because the Islam of Najashi was not made public.

When An-Najashi Passed away , in Al-Bukhari Rasulullah (saw) said “on this day a Righteous man died in  Abyssinia so lets pray on him”  Lets make Salathul Janaza on him and Rasulullah(saw) Knew the exact day one An-Najashi died , He know It on the same day , which means that Jibrial (as) came to Mohammed (saw) to inform him about that event.   So it was an Important Event that Jibrial (as) has to come and convey to Rasulullah (saw) and Messenger of Allah Al-Mustafa lead Solat on an-Najashi.   He prayed for him in another Hadith Rasulullah(saw) said “Istagfirulee haqee kum” ask Allah(swt) to forgive him (ie) asking the Sahaba to make Dua for An-Najashi.

Kingdom of Aksum



Some lessons to learn from these narrations:

1.    Number one which really stands out , which is firmness and steadfastness of Sahaba (ra), they held high to the principles they did not compromise , even when they knew they would be in danger , they went to an-Najashi and said E’sa is a servant of Allah. In their earlier discussion they decided they are going to speak the truth no matter what happen , so its important to have that sprit that we are not need to protect ourselves but we are here to protect our religion. Our religion comes first even if we have to give up our lives  and stuffs. We would go thru whatever the pain and suffering we have to safeguard Islam, that’s the first lesson.

2.    They would not given to the local tradition that would contradict Islam. They would adopt local tradition and culture that does not contradict with the religion, but whenever they see a contradiction they are willing to stand against it.  It was the tradition of the Abyssinians that to make Sujoodh whenever they come to greet the Negus. Amr-bin-al-As when he went to an-Najashi , said beware when these people come in they are not going to make Sujoodh for you.  When they came in Truly they did not as Amr-bin-al-As suspected , they did not make sujoodh and An-Najashi was angry and he asked how come you does not make Sujoodh to me like everybody else does.   They(sahaba) said we do not make sujoodh to anyone but ALLAH.  In our Religion  we don’t make sujoodh to anyone but Allah. They had Pride, even though they are living in foreign land with difficult situation you can see that they had pride in their religion.


3.    When we say that the Muslims in Mecca had the Jamah and an Ameer , some one who wants to Argue against this concept can comeback , well obliviously they had Jamah and Ameer , Rasulullah (saw) was there then what do you expect.  But what about in Abyssinia. With the Muslims we are living today loose and everybody is doing their own thing and going in their own direction or with they organized under one banner and a common leadership this is one thing that stands out in all of the narrations that Muslims were organized and they were group and they worked together in a Jamaah and they had a Leader Jafar-bin-abi-Talib(Ra) he was the spokes men , he was the Ameer. So this is not an optional thing and it’s not something that if you like it you do it .Muslims wherever they are they have to be in an Organized fashion.   This is an organized religion. It is not an individual or a spiritual thing to do on your own.  Because the religion that has many of the ibadah done collectively to teach us . The sprit of Jamah ,
Salah is done collectively ,
Hajj is done collectively ,

so Muslims living in the West they have to Organized and they have to come together in a moment and they have to common leader ship which they stand behind. The decision once made in Abyssinia (ie) only one man will speak and will not interior or go against and contradict to what he is saying

4.    You can see the extent of the participation of Muslim women , now I want you to contrast it and balance it with what I spoke about earlier on , when I was speaking about the role of the Muslim women as a wife and a mother . Islam is some where between the two extreme , in every matter we have two extremes and a middle .  Islam is a middle of everything, It’s a middle way , so for every situation we have to extremes and the Fiqh (Wisdom) is to know the exact middle is ?. because there are lots of points on the spectrum but only point , one dot  is a middle , so its very easy to hit everything but the middle ground , its not easy to hit the exact Target of middle Ground and that’s where Fiqh and Wisdom comes in to play .  Its very evidence in early Muslims history that   the Muslim sister had very important role to play .

a.    The first Muslim was a Women
b.    The first shahid in Islam was a Women, The first Marter was Sumayya (rah)
c.    You can see the participation of Muslim Women in Hijra , in Abyssinia , Their participation in the Hijra to Medina.
d.    Their participation in Jihad
e.    Their participation in Jamah
f.    Their participation in Teaching and Learning

So some of the Artificial barriers that we have erected now. It’s not existed during the time of Rasulullah(saw) , I means among us they are people carrying it to both extremes. One extreme is that men and women can mix and laugh and joke and without no barriers Hijab is optional and on the other extreme even the voice of Women is not allowed to spoken in public ,we might have them living in different planet. So these are two Extremes.

But we need to find the middle role , I want to give you an example to show you the relationship that men and women had in the time of Rasulullah(saw) , In this conversation its relevant to talk about the migration to al-Habasha . when the muslims came back to Medina in the seventh year (7AH) of hijra , the wife of Jafar-ibn-abu-Talib(ra) Asma-bint-unaiz (Rah) she went to visit Hafsa(rah) the daughter of Umar-bin-Kattab (ra) who was the wife of Rasulullah(saw) , Asma-bint-unaiz went to visit her and Umar-bin-Kattab (ra) came to visit his daughter and he came in and saw this women sitting in his room , he asked her who is this women , she said “hazahii asma-bint-umaiz” (This is Asma-Bint-Umaiz”) , Umar-bin-Kattab said Al-Habashiyaa? , is this the Abyysinian women ? (not that she is from abyysinian but he is referring to the fact that she was in Abyysininya for so long)Is this Abyssinian women, Al-bahariyaa? (Is this the women came from the sea?, because they have to cross the sea to get into medina ) Hafsa said “yes” .  Umar-bin-Kattab (ra) told Asma we made Hijra before you therefore we have more closer and rights on Rasululllah(saw) then you do. Asma was quiet  and angry by that statement and she said No,  you are not closer to Rasulullah(saw) then us , you were with the messenger of Allah, he was feeding the Hungry among you , Teaching the Ignorant among you  while we were in distance from this pious land we are in a far away land then this pious land we were not comfortable over there. We didn’t likeit being far away from Rasululah(saw)  , we were feeling home sick to the Messenger of Allah not to Mecca but it was Messenger of Allah, we wants to be with him and then she said I am going to go and tell Rasullla(Sw) what you are saying now I am not going toad anything on it or substrate to it, I am going to say as you said it. And she want to Rasulullah(sw) this is what Umar told me. Rasulullah(saw) asked her what did you say? She said and repeated the same statement , Rasulullah(saw) said no UMAR and his companions do not have more rights then you do to me (ie they are not closer to me then you ), they have rewards of one hijra and you have rewards of two hijra . you get double the reward that they do. Asma-bint-umaiz said when Rasulullah(saw) mentioned this hadith to me the sahabas who were in Abyssinia Au-Musa alAsaariaa (ra) with his friends will come to me in large groups all trying to learn this hadith of Rasulullah(saw) from me , she said there is nothing better  than this in this world then this Hadith . This hadith was so valuable to them it was worth then the world and every thing in it. So now here you see that first of all Umar-bin-kattab speaking tothis Women and they are having a conversation and it was a straight fwd conversation and then Asma-bin-umaiz teaching the Sahaba Au-Musa al Asaariaa (ra) and other men about this Hadith , so this was the nature of the relationship that exist.  Obliviously if you look at the all of the reference that we have that deal with the relationship of men and women you can see that thr was a element of formalities in their dealings. You would not find any incident that they joke and laughs each other. So they knew their limits

But in the same time it was not that extreme as we might see among some Muslims now, an example of the participation in the strength of the early Muslims would be Umm Habiba(rah),

Keep in mind the following factor and see how difficult on her.
1)    She is the daughter of the unrival leader of Mecca , Abu-Sufyan , for her to leave that comfortable life , wealth , nobility in her society and go and live as a foreigner  in a alien land is not easy.

2)    She is living in a foreign land

3)    Which was disasters, when her husband reached to Abyssinia , he apostate and become Christian.  He was one of the sahaba who made Hijra when he got there he changed his mind. Now Ubidullah bin-jash he went thru different stages in his life , he kept on flipping back and forth before Islam changing his mind and going to different religions. This was his personality so when he got there to Al-habasha he just changed from being a Muslim to being a Christian and the most influential person on a women is her husband. it was very difficult for umm Habiba (rah) to deal with this situation. Her husband apostate and becoming Christian, obliviously after that they have to separate.   Keep all of these factors in mind and see how strong she was , how steadfast she was and how she was able to hold firm on her religion.

What is the ruling on Hijra:  Migration is Compulsory, if a Muslim individual is unable to establish his basic Islamic practice in the land , such as prayer , fasting and the Adaan.  If a Muslim is unable to establish his essential practices of Islam then they must find somewhere else. It is permissible if a Muslim is confronted with problems that make difficult in that land he is permitted to leave his land for another land of Islam taking relief. 

Its forbidden If some one (Muslim) is playing a critical role and no body can step in and take that role then it is forbidden that person to leave.

What is the ruling living among non-Muslims ? This is one Topic that Muslims in the West had been avoiding to talk about. We shy away from certain Topic because they are controversial we don’t want to deal with them. but eventually will be faced with real problems that will force us to deal with these issues.  We need to have frank discussions on such matters, we cannot just throw them and close it and crush them under the carpet thinking that they will go away.

When it comes to living in non-muslim land it in consensus of Muslims scholars that is not allowed (to live in non-muslim land). The Hadiths are very clear “I have nothing to do with a Muslim who lives among the one associates god besides Allah” This is one Hadith of difference of narrations.  The scholars gave exceptions   they said

 if a person is propagating the message of Islam and is practicing Islam freely, then that is the excuse for them to stay.

They also give temporary for somebody who is doing business or seeking knowledge. This is on a temporary basic it is not to settle indefinitely.  

Therefore it is not allow for us to live in Non-Muslim environment unless we are fulfilling the responsibility of Dawah. Otherwise we are accumulating Sins by default. Dawah is not an Optional thing for us it is something that justifies a Muslim living in non-Muslim society.

By Dawah we need to understand this in a comprehensive way, it does not mean that every single person need to do the same thing. We need Dawah in comprehensive way anything of serving t he welfare of Islam anything that serves the propagation of the message which fall under dawah. It does not necessarily means that you distributing leaflet to non-Muslims or giving speeches to them. these are two ways but there are many of them.

  1. Relief work is a work of dawah,
  2. charitable work is the work of dawah.
  3. Teaching Muslims in the west if the work of Dawah too.

So we need to understand the concept of Dawah in most comprehensive way.


Usman-ibn-madhoon was one of the muhajireen who migrated to Abyssinia , he came back to Mecca since he left he has to come with some protection , he sought protection and he was offered protection from Walid-bin-Mugaira , who is one of the elders of Mecca.   Usman-ibn-Madhoon entered in to Mecca he saw that everyone else , every other Muslim is going thru persecution except for himself , this did not make him happy , he felt jealous how come everyone else is going thru this purification of their sins except myself.  He went to Walid-ibn-mugaira I don’t need your protection I am giving it back to you , he asked why are you my son doing that, he replied I want the protection of Allah. I don’t want our protection.
He said well , since I have given you protection publicly so you have to give it back publicly ,so they went to al-Kabba  and al-Walikd-ibn-mugaira said Usman-ibn-Madhoon has given me back my protection , then Usman–ibn-Madhoon said yes , I did find tht Walid-ibn-Mugaira is very trust worthy and honest man but I want to be under the protection of Allah and Allah alone. Later on he was sitting in the  gathering with one of the famous poets of Arabia Lubaid.

And Al-Lubaid was reciting some of his poetry and he said “Kullu shaiin Khallalahah batilun “ (Every thing safeguard is vanity” )everyging is going to go away, Usman said yes you are right.   This was the gathering held by lot of people and then (Wa kullu naimin la mahatan zairun) and all pleasure must fade Usman ibn madhoon interepted and said that wrong.

The pleasure of Paradise never fade away. Al-Lubaid being a famous and respected Poet of Arabia is kind of shocked , how come someone from the audience respond to me like that , he said oh man of Qurish there you sat with you use to not to be so insulted , when this thing come about? When this started happening among u?

So one man in the audience said, don’t worry about it, this is one of the fools who follow the religion of Mohammed, don’t take it to heart.  Usman bin Madhoon responded they had a fight .so the man stood up he punched Usman bin madhoon in his eye until whole thing is black. Al-Walidh-ibn-Mugaira saw this , and came to Usman and said there is no need your eye to go thru this suffering. You were under my protection why did you give it up , Usman-bin-Madhoon said no , he said ‘ not so  I swear my only problem is that my good eye is need of what the other one suffered for God sake. Actually I am under the protection of One stronger and more capable of yourself. Oh ibn Abu-Shams  . al-Walid again said , do you want to come back to my protection he said no. I want to be under the protection of Allah.

And remember that some of these are Hadith and someof these are from seerah we are trying to mix both , so learn from Hadith and also Learn from Seerah.

Abu-Bakr(ra) did not make hijra to Abyssinia. But he was suffering in Makkah so he requested the permission from Rasulullah(saw) to allow him to migrate . Rasulullah(saw) gave him permission Abu-Bakr(Ra) left  , he left Makkah and reached Yamen , bark algamadh and then he met with Syed-alHabish, al-Habish are the tribe that use to live close to Mecca.  Ibn-Ad-gunna he met with him, Ibn-Ad-gunna asked him Abu-Bakr whr are you heading towards, abu bkr said my people has offended me , treated me badly and force me to live . Ibn-Ad-Gunna said such a person like you is an Assets to his people

You are not a person to leave and you are not a person to driven out of your land. Why he said because you aid those in stress andyou are kindly towards the needy , then he said you go back and you are under my protection, he took him to Mecca and he went to up to front of the people of Mecca and said ,”Abu-Bakr” is under my protection , how can you drive out such a person from your land . You drive out a person like Abu-Bakr. He said he is under my protection.

The people of Qurish they came to ibn-ad-gunna and said well we accept your protection but we are not going to allow Abu-Bakr to worship publicly. So please make sure he does not . ibn-ad-gunna came to Abu-Bakr and said your people, I don’t wanted to offend them so don’t worship publicly.
Previously what Abu-Bakr would do , he will pray outside in front of the people and Ayisha(Rah) said my father use to be a man with a very soft heart and when he recite the verses of Quran he will cry. So you would have all of the kids, women and men attracted around Abu-Bakr watching him and this turned the people of Qurish crazy.  And they felt that this will be a fitna for their people.

Ibn-ad-gunna told Abu-Bakr to worship privately , then Abu-Bakr(ra) agreed. For a while AbuBkr  (ra) was praying at home in privacy and then he have an idea. He decided to make a Musallah in the open area of the house. In some style of Islamic architecture house built in a Square and in the middle its empty space that is called ‘Fanah’ in Arabic . OR fanah could be like backyard the place that is open but its part of the house . AbuBkr (Ra) took his fanah/backyard to be his Musallah, eventhough its inside from house but people can see it from outside.

So the same problem happened again all of the people gathering outside house of Abu-Bakr(ra) watching him praying , they were amazed that Kushu that Abu-Bakr as siddiq(ra) had. The People of Qurish had fear and went to Ibn-Ad-Gunna and said “we told you that we don’t want him to worship publicly” So ibn-Ad-gunna went to Abu-Bakr and spoke to about it. Abu-Bakr said to Ibn-Ad-Gunna I am giving your protection back I don’t need it, I will be in the protection of Allah. Finally he did give up the protection of Ibn-ad-gunna.

Few notes on the story of Abu-Bakr:

1    When Abu-Bakr met ibn-ad-gunna, ibn-ad-gunna asked him how come you are migrating from your land, Abu-Bakr siddique said in one narration “Where are you going/migrating” he said I want to travel in the land in order to worship my Lord. Abu-Bakr is leaving his land for no purpose but Worship Allah. To go in the land where he can worship Allah(swt) seeking freedom . What will he do with that freedom? Just worship Allah. They would use every resource that they have to please Allah(swt), he was not travelling to do Business, he was travelling to Worship Allah(swt)

2    What did ibn-ad-Gunna know about Abu-Bakr?   What was the repatation that Abu-Bakr had among the Non-Muslims?

-    Caring for the Needy
-    Providing for the poor
-    Sponsoring the Orphans
-    Standing up for the rights

That was the reputation of Abu-Bakr.  He was not known for evil man or corrupted character ,he was known for these righteous values which, every person in the face of the earth who has decency will recognize his value and this should be the personality of the Muslims where ever they are. this is what people know of you , your righteousness, you are standing for what is right, your charitable work , and that is the one that let Ibn-ad-Gunna to say I am giving you the protection you are an Assets for your people , we cannot let you leave, we can’t allow you to leave Mecca. You are a credit for them, you are pride/prize for your people, This should be the reputation of Every Muslim.  This is what  people should know about us.

3    His Salah was his Dawa. : Publicly practicing the ritual of Islam is DAWA.  For the people to see Hajj, For the people to see our Iftaar on Ramadan , having open dinner in Majid and invite our neighbor hood to break fasting with us and some of them they even fast, they are Non-Muslim they will fast. They will join in, infact many non-muslims are enthusiastic to participate with Muslims in Ramadan. Let them do that , Let  them go ahead, let them know our taste the value of Siam (fast) , the flavor of it, and invite them to have iftaar Let them see the socializaing that muslims are having in Ramadan. Salah al- tarawee .  We should not hide our in flavours our masajids and close the access to the public this is Dawa .  Abu-Bakr As sidque will do it in Public and people of Qurish were furious. Because they thought that this would attract the people towards Islam. Seeing  Ab-bkr seeing the Khushu (Concentrate in prayer) that he had will bring them closer to Allah(swt)  , so we should publily do this Ibdadhth  because there is a special flavor in them and there is a uniqueness on the rituals that allah(swt) priscribed on us


4    We should publized the message , the enemies of Islam would not mind if you are praying in your cubical as your private Life , we are not going to interfere with it , but they are going to be resistant to you doing it in public and that is what we should do , because we want to Attract the good among all people to become muslims, and good heart will get attracted with good things.
